Accessibility Specialist
| Employment Type: Full-Time |
| Summary: Respond to information and referral requests related to information on architectural, communications, digital, and programmatic accessibility. Thoroughly review architectural plans to assess compliance with accessibility standards, identify potential accessibility issues, and recommend solutions that comply with legal requirements while working to advance equitable access for people with disabilities. Provide expert advice, guidance, and technical assistance on architectural, communications, digital, and programmatic accessibility matters. Prepare reports and documentation outlining accessibility issues, findings, and recommendations. Promote awareness of accessibility issues and best practices. Assist Disabled individuals in determining their options for addressing access barriers. Represent the organization in public meetings ensuring compliance with legal requirements while working to advance equitable access for people with disabilities. Coordinate the Access Club, an advocacy group of Disabled individuals who are interested in accessibility issues and work to make our community more accessible. This includes recruiting members, coordinating weekly meetings, assisting in notification of legal violations, and coordinating advocacy which includes direct action. Provide training and education on accessibility principles and best practices. Engage in community outreach to educate individuals with disabilities, their families, and others about our efforts to improve accessibility and inform them about services available through RCIL and our partner organizations. Completely, accurately and contemporaneously document all services and activities in the organization’s documentation system. Prepare written reports as requested. Produce content for the newsletter, website and social media on architectural, communications, digital, and programmatic accessibility. Perform any other duties as assigned. |
| Duties: IV. TECHNOLOGY/ EQUIPMENT/ TOOLS: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint: Intermediate Communication Software (Outlook, Zoom, Microsoft Teams): Intermediate V. WORK CONDITIONS (ENVIRONMENT AND SCHEDULE): The shared office environment has light to moderate noise. This role routinely uses standard office equipment. Although the position generally works standard business hours, there may be times when services are provided during other times of the day. VI. Physical Demands AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Some out-of-town travel may be required to participate in work-related meetings, conferences or trainings. Community advocacy and community meetings will be required. |

| Qualifications: 1. Education and Experience: · Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline or three years of experience in a related field, including architectural design, construction, or accessibility consulting. · An understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act, International Building Code (IBC), and other relevant accessibility standards. · Experience with accessibility inspections and plan review and/or digital accessibility is preferred. · Professional and lived experience may be considered in lieu of academic credentials. 2. Skills and Competencies: · Excellent personal and written communication skills. · Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills. · Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. · Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders. · Strong time management skills with a proven ability to be punctual and meet deadlines. · Commitment to the mission and work of RCIL. |
