CDRNYS

One of our employees, Susan Stahl, is currently overseas in Japan.

In her own words:

“I work in the Transition Department at CDR and I am the Regional Lead for the (New York) Open Doors Transition Center for the Rochester area. I am excited and humbled that I have been asked to travel to Japan from December 10 to December 21, 2019 representing CDR. I will be taking part in and speaking at a Seminar in Osaka, Japan. I will also be attending the Japanese Council on Independent Living National Seminar in Fukuoka, Japan. I will also be traveling to Tokyo, Japan. The purpose of my trip is to share my experiences transitioning people with disabilities from nursing facilities and institutions into their own homes. CDR is continuing this exchange of information so that we can work toward a world where people are not imprisoned in nursing homes.”

According to CEO Bruce Darling, the Japanese IL community is “interested in learning about our model for institutional transition after getting a recommendation in a UN review on the Convention of the Rights of People with Disabilities.”

In addition to hearing about all of the work being done in Japan, Susan will be talking about her work with our Open Doors Transition Center. The Japanese Independent Living Centers have worked very hard to establish a dialogue with us about the work we are all doing. Their drive to support people’s right to live in the community very much mirrors the work we are doing here. Not only has this brought them to the United States twice, looking for ways to collaborate, but it has led them to translate the Disability Integration Act into Japanese, to see how some of the concepts in the law might apply to their work. Susan is looking to bring back similar insights from their work.

Below are photos of Susan at the Muchu Center in Japan. The last photo of the QR code illustrates how the Japanese and Susan can communicate with each other, and ask questions to one another.
