The Center for Disability Rights (CDR) is deeply disappointed in Governor Hochul for advancing an SEIU proposal to defund and devastate the Disability-led organizations that created the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program, leaving some Disabled people without services and forcing them into institutions.

The Center for Disability Rights (CDR) commends Senator Gustavo Rivera (D-Bronx) for his support of the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program (CDPAP) and for introducing S.9901, which would establish a licensing system for CDPAP fiscal intermediaries and provide a viable alternative to Governor Kathy Hochul’s attack on CDPAP and the Disability Community.

The Center for Disability Rights is outraged by the Democratic National Committee’s decision to invite Governor Kathy Hochul to speak at the DNC Convention. “The DNC’s decision to elevate someone who is attacking Disabled people and the services that allow us to live in freedom is a slap in our face,” said CDR’s Chair of the Board of Directors.

Since her comments calling the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program a “racket,” Governor Hochul has continued to demonstrate ableist behavior by ignoring multiple communications from leaders within the Disability community. In response, ILCs and Disability activists will be protesting the Governor’s Disability Pride event today.
