Queens Against Goodwill

The concept of Goodwill or other American thrift stores perplexes me. We get these monetarily cheap items but we never think of what happens behind the scenes. It boggles the mind that Goodwill with all their money would pay people with disabilities less than minimum wage. This is discrimination at its finest!

It’s difficult enough to explain what a thrift store is to my European friends without even mentioning Goodwill, because in some European countries they have charity shops. Charity shops are like American thrift stores, except all of them have a direct charitable cause that they are raising funds for. This is not to say that America should adopt the European charity shop model, even though it wouldn’t hurt. However, going the opposite direction and discriminating disabled people while preaching something as noble as “good will” is unacceptable.

And it’s not just Goodwill! There are so many stores that are benefitting from sub-minimum wages! Being thrifty drag queens means that we could make almost anything werk without having much to begin with, so we can manage supporting thrift stores that appreciate help from any worker regardless of the abilities or disabilities they have! Take a vow with me today not to go to any store thaAgonyQAGt pays disabled people less!

Meet Agony. She is a queen from San Marcos, Texas and she says “Being thrifty drag queens means that we could make almost anything werk.”

Thank you Agony for joining the campaign as a Queen Against Goodwill!
