Center for Disability Rights at the White House

Center for Disability Rights (CDR) will mark the 25th anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act at a special White House Reception on Monday, July 20 at 3:15pm (EST), represented by its Executive Director Bruce E. Darling and Director of Advocacy Stephanie Woodward.

“I remember when we were first introducing the ADA” said Darling. “I was a part of the community that was fighting to get lifts put on buses 25 years ago and being told it was virtually impossible. Now, 25 years later it is something that we often take for granted.” Darling also stated, “I am excited that we are a part of and playing a pivotal role in fulfilling the promise of the Americans with Disabilities Act for people still in nursing facilities and other institutional settings.”

The Americans with Disabilities Act, commonly referred to as the ADA, was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1990. A number of events marking this year’s anniversary are taking place. Information may be found online at www.adaanniversary.org

The Center for Disability Rights, Inc. (CDR) is a non‐profit service and advocacy organization devoted to the full integration, independence, and civil rights of people of all ages with all types of disabilities. With services all across New York State and offices in Rochester, Corning, Geneva and Albany, CDR represents the concerns of thousands of people with disabilities. You can learn more about the services we offer and our ongoing systems and individual advocacy by visiting our website at www.cdrnys.org.

Woodward stated, “While it’s an honor to be invited to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ADA at the White House, it’s important for us to remember that it has not ended discrimination against people with disabilities. CDR works to educate the community and empower people with disabilities so that we can work together to end that discrimination and create a more accessible community.”
