Manager of Government Affairs



Employment Type: Full-Time
Summary:
This position advocates for legislative, regulatory, and policy change at the State and Federal level in regards to furthering the civil rights of people with disabilities. This position monitors legislative and regulatory activities, assists in developing advocacy plans, oversees writing and review of new policies that affect systems change, analyzes legislation and determines the potential impact on the rights of people with disabilities. This position requires travel.
Duties:
Demonstrates daily commitment to CDR mission, independent living, and disability rights.

Develops advocacy plans and policy papers in reaction to local, New York State, and federal laws.

Analyzes legislation, budget initiatives, and proposed regulations that affect the lives of individuals with disabilities.

Assures timely and accurate responses to legislative and regulatory actions.

Advises, implements, and participates in coalitions; acts as liaison to various groups/projects, etc.

Collaborates effectively the Team with regards to policies and actions to focus on.

Meets with various Federal and State legislators, and representatives of Federal and State agencies to advocate for the rights of disabled people.

Develops relationships with key legislators and their staffs’/committee staffs’ and regulators to effectively channel the objectives of the organization.

Represents the organization either as a participant or advisor in developing and presenting testimony and public policy for the disability community.

Organizes, tracks and administers state/federal activities.

Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills:
Ability to manage multiple projects.

Understand both text and subtext of spoken and written communication Strong writing skills.

Ability to analyze spoken and written information including legislation, regulation and policy documents.

Ability to build and manage relationships with advocacy organizations and legislative offices.
Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Public Policy, Law, Health Care Administration, Social Work or Liberal Arts.

At least one (1) year experience in policy analysis, advocacy, or a similar role is required to fully perform the essential duties of the job.

Experience with the Disability Community preferred.
