Sign Language Interpreter - Scheduler II



Employment Type: Full-Time
Summary:
Interprets and translates spoken language using American Sign Language and other manual signing systems, and vice versa, to facilitate communication between hearing and Deaf individuals.
Duties:
Essential Duties:
  • Performs American Sign Language (ASL)/English Interpreting in compliance with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability (HIPAA) and all federal, state and local laws that may apply in the setting where work is performed.
  • Assists with scheduling, recording, billing, database entry and other delegated duties.
  • Participates in professional development to meet interpreting standards. Duties.
  • Participates in regular supervision with Program Manager.
Other Duties:
  • Performs administrative functions as delegated.
  • Promotes and maintains customer and vendor relations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Working knowledge of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 as it relates to communication and potential communication barriers and accommodations.
  • Interpreter must demonstrate fluency and competence in American Sign Language and English with the ability to interpret, both expressively and receptively, in both languages.
  • Ability to voice interpret.
  • Ability to handle different situations such as meetings, conference calls, trainings, large team meetings in a rapidly changing environment. Ability to be flexible in working with persons who have different levels and types of language skills. Be familiar with language analysis through the use of Contact Signing and be adaptable to the variety of language uses.
  • Knowledge of the video interpreting technology.
  • Ability to organize work and keep a schedule of interpreting services.
  • Basic ability to use computer word processing with the Microsoft Word program and Excel.
  • Familiarity and interest in professional and ethical standards for interpreters.
  • Ability to get along with individuals of all backgrounds.
  • Able to fill out basic forms and applications for participants.
  • Ability to be flexible and work varying hours depending on the needs of the programs.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.
Skills:
  • Certified and/or eligible for certification form NAD/RID (or equivalent)
  • Current valid NYS Drivers License
  • Reliable personal vehicle
  • Ability to provide 25 hours of Interpreting services per week
  • Member in good standing of local and national RID
  • Working knowledge of HIPAA and Universal Precautions as they apply to interpreters
  • Ability to work some evening and weekends
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Record of current immunization and PPD
  • Ability to work in multi-cultural situations
Qualifications:
Educations Requirements:
  • Associates Degree in Applied Science in Interpreting
  • Equivalent experience in lieu of degree will be considered
Experience Requirements:
  • Minimum one (1) year of community based (non-educational) interpreting experience with Associate's Degree
  • Completion of community based practicum with Bachelor's Degree.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Access would be very helpful
